What was the Act of Supremacy?
Made Elizabeth supreme governer of the Church of England - all clergy and royal officials swore an oath of allegiance to her as the head of the Church.
What was the Act of Uniformity?
Established the appearance of churches and the form of services they held.
What were the Royal Injunctions?
A set of instructions issued by Sir William Cecil on a wide range of issues to reinforce the acts of Supremacy and Uniformity.
What would please the Catholics from the Religious Settlement?
- They could still believe in the transubstantiation - the Book of Common Prayer’s wording was deliberately unclear so the Catholics and Protestants can interpret what goes on with the bread and wine themselves.
- Images were allowed in churches
- Priests must wear special clothing
What would please the Protestants from the Religious Settlement?
- Bible/Prayer books were in English
- Control of the Pope ended
- Pilgrimages and ‘fake’ miracles were banned
How successful was the Elizabethan Religious Settlement?
- Around 8000 priests and less important clergy took the oath of supremacy considering there were approximatley 10,000 parishes it was very successful.
- The majority of ordinary people also accepted Elizabeth’s religious settlement.
