Electronic Test Equipment ------ Flashcards
What is a DVOM? What does the abbreviation stand for?
What is its purpose?
DVOM stands for Digital Volt-Ohm Meter. It’s a tool used by electrical engineers and technicians to measure and verify electrical quantities, such as voltage, amperage, and resistance.
What is an Ammeter?
What is its purpose?
An ammeter (abbreviation of Ampere meter) is an instrument used to measure the current in a circuit.
Measuring amperage is useful for a variety of applications. The quantity of amps tells you how much electricity is being drawn through the power cable
What is a megger?
What is its purpose?
How do you operate a megger?
A Megger is a type of an electrical test equipment which is used to measure insulation resistance. It applies a high voltage to the circuit and measures the amount of current that flows through the insulation.
This helps to identify potential problems with the insulation, such as damage or degradation.
Establish a connection from ground to the desired terminal you are testing. Run the meter for 120 seconds and reference the reading to mfg specs.
What is a millivolt meter?
What is its purpose?
A millivolt meter is an instrument for measuring potential differences in millivolts. It is usually a function that is included in DVOMs.
It is useful for troubleshooting circuits that operate at very low voltages.
What is a power analyzer?
What is its purpose?
A power analyzer is an instrument that measures and quantifies the rate of power flow in electrical systems
What is a phase rotation and sequence indicator?
What is its purpose?
How do you operate a phase rotation and sequence indicator?
A phase rotation/sequence indicator compares the phase rotation of two 3-phase connections by measuring the phase angle difference between the phases. The meter indicates the phase sequence using lights or a digital display, and shows if the sequence is clockwise or counterclockwise.
It is used for correctly wiring a motor to spin in the desired direction.
Hook it to the motor and spin the shaft manually and it will tell you what direction it’s wired for. You then hook the same meter to your power supply and determine the phase rotation so you know how to connect it to the motor.
What is a micron gauge?
What is its purpose?
A micron gauge, also known as an electronic vacuum gauge, measures system pressure to determine if a deep vacuum has been achieved and if it can be maintained.
This information helps technicians ensure that a system is dry and leak-free.
What is a psychrometer?
What is its purpose?
A psychrometer is a device for measuring air humidity
It is useful in measuring both wet bulb temp, dry bulb temp, and relative humidity. This is useful for many psychometric calculations.
What is a velometer?
What is its purpose?
A velometer is a device used to measure the speed of air in a given area.
