Q

What do you know about the origins of electronic and synthesizer music?

A

Electronic & synthesiser exploded with the invention of the Moog synthesizer in 1964 by Robert Moog, replacing the Mellotron keyboard as the electronic instrument of choice.

In Germany a new scene of bands known as ‘Krautrock’ emerged that were experimenting with synthesisers. The invention of the midi keyboard in the early 80’s simplified electronic music
and it was the dominating force and would define much of the era’s music.

House music arrived from Chicago in 1987 and from this Techno evolved in Detroit, spreading across Europe with a darker and heavier sound. From this, Electronica and Big Beat emerged,
becoming increasingly popular in the 1990s. After a lull in popularity, a new wave of groups have formed, heavily influenced by the popular culture films and the 1980s synth laden era.
