Electromagnetic waves Flashcards
(20 cards)
define a carrier wave
waves used to carry any type of signal
define optical fibre
fin glass fibre used to transmit light signals
define white light
the light that includes all the colours of the spectrum
define wave speed
distance travelled per second by a Wave Crest for trout
define radiation dose
the amount of ionising radiation a person receives
name a danger and use for infrared
burning if concentrated -heating ,remote controls ,cooking ,fibre optics
name a danger and use for microwaves
burning if concentrated -mobile phones, satellites
name a danger use for radio waves
may cause Burns- communications ,TV ,radio
name a danger and use for visible waves
damage to eyes -illumination, fibre optics
name a danger and use UV waves
sunburn cancer- tanning beds, security marking
name a danger and used for x-rays
cell destruction and mutation -security
name a danger and used for gamma waves
sterilising, detecting and killing cancer
what type of waves are em waves?
transverse
describe short wavelength
high frequency and high energy
describe long-wavelength
low frequency and low energy
what is ionising radiation?
radiation that is absorbed by the atom
why are ultraviolet waves hazardous?
skin tissues can be ionised and damaged by short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation causes skin cancer
why are X-rays hazardous?
they pass through soft body tissue without being absorbed denser tissues such as bone absorbs some X-Ray and can be ionised
why are gamma rays hazardous?
they pass through the body but very high energy waves can ionise atoms in living tissues
what waves are used in fibre optics?
infrared and light
