Elbow Evaluation & Intervention: Cnt. Flashcards
Why should you not aggressively stretch a child/adult’s elbow?
Vigorous stretching may cause myositis ossificans (hetertopic ossification)
Gently stretch the biceps especially in children
Lateral Epicondylitis & Wrist Splints
Splinting is used to help rest the muscles and by splinting the wrist the pt. has a decreased ability to grip objects which would cause reinjury.
Lateral Epicondylitis & Transverse Friction Massage
Massage the origin of the ECRB to disrupt the fibrosis scar tissue creating a better lay down of tissues. Massage also increase blood flow which promotes healing.
Increase the intensity of massage throughout the stages of healing.
Lateral Epicondylitis & Wrist ext. Exercises
Elastic resistance should be used for eccentric wrist ext. exercises. Helps strengthen the muscle and makes the scar tissue more elastic by lengthening the tissue.
Lateral Epicondylitis & AROM
AROM should be started in a gravity eliminated position which allows for easy mvnt. in a pain free zone.
Lateral Epicondylitis & Pt. Education
Adapt activities in order to avoid elbow ext. with a forceful grasp.
Avoid griping activities.
2 Common Tx’s fir Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
Mobilization, Gliding, & Flossing: Increase nerve gliding around the surrounding tissue, improves blood flow.
Activity Modification: Avoid motions, static positions that aggravate sx’s of put stress on the nerve.
