Elbow Flashcards
articulations of the elbow joint
trochlea of humerus - trochlear notch of ulna
capitellum of humers - head of radius
what movement is the humero-ulnar joint responsible for
flexion-extension
what movement is radio-capitellar joint responsilbe for
pronation-supination
along with radio-ulnar joint
muscles responsible for elbow extension
triceps muscle (inserts onto the olecranon process of ulna)
muscles responsible for elbow flexion
brachialias
biceps brachii
brachioradialis
common extensor origin at the elbow
lateral epicondyle
common flexor origin at the elbow
medial epicondyle
is OA in the elbow common?
No!
is RA in the elbow common?
Yes!
What is epicondylitis
pain and inflammation of the enthesis at the elbow
enthesis = attachment of flexor or extensor origins
What is tennis elbow
lateral epicondylitis - inflammation at the common extensor origin
What causes tennis elbow
regular and repeated resisted extension at the wrist
presentation of tennis elbow
painful and tender lateral epicondyle
pain on resisted middle finger and wrist extension
Tx of tennis elbow
self-limiting - rest, physio
NSAIDs
steroid injections
brace - elbow clasp
Surgical Tx of tennis elbow
Rarely offered! Variable results
Division/excision of some fibres of the common extensor origin
