Effect of aging population Flashcards
1
Q
What are some overall physiological changes seen with aging
A
- Stiffer lung because of loss of synovial fluids between ribs and sternum
- diaphragm gets weaker because of atrophy
- lungs becomes more compliant
- susceptible to respiratory infection
- renal function declines
- blood pressure instability
2
Q
effects of aging on structural change in the respiratory system
A
- chest wall stiffens
- kyphoscoliosis
- atrophy of breathing muscle
- decrease rib cage and abdominal expansion
- lung is more compliant
- **some hyperinflation–>increase deadspace
- increase VD/VT
3
Q
effects of aging on functional change in the respiratory system (1)
A
- decrease gas exchange surface area
- small airway prone to compression and collapse
- ->increase resistance, lead to decrease expiratory flow rates - decrease VC, FeV1, generally spirometry result
4
Q
effects of aging on functional change in the respiratory system (2)
A
- lower /Q ratio in lung basese –> hypoxemia
- lowered MV
- decrease hypercapnia , hypoxia ventilatory drive
- increase risk of community acquired pneumonia, inluenza
- less effective airway clearnce
5
Q
Effect of aging on the structural changes in cardiovascular system
A
- increase arterial wall stiffness
- ->LV mass increases, increase systolic BP - calcifiication, thickening of valve
- ->mitral regurgitation, atrial dilation then atrial fibrillation
6
Q
Effect of aging on the function changes in cardiovascular system
A
- delayed ventircular filling
- ->Ventricular filling depends MORE on atrial contraction - slight decrease resting HR
- ->Loss of SA node cell
- ->decrease myocardial responsiveness to B-receptor stimulation - postural hypotension can lead to fainting
- -> baroreceptor doesnt compensate quick enough
7
Q
What is the major age-related impairment?
A
- increase vascular resistance
- decrease response to b-adrenergic stimulation
- Hampered ventricular relaxation
8
Q
What is the major adaptions
A
- left ventricular hypertrophy
2. increase atrial contribution to diastolic filling
