Edema Flashcards
Physiology of edema?
Abnormal fluid accumulation in the interstitium due to an imbalance in fluid homeostasis
What are the types of edema? (4)
Peripheral, anasarca, periorbital, and internal
Describe peripheral edema
- can be what two kinds?
Swelling of lower legs, ankles and feet
- pitting or non pitting
What is anasarca?
Extreme generalized peripheral edema
Describe periorbital edema
-Also commonly associated with what pathology?
Edema around the eyes
- Nephrotic syndrome
Describe kinds of internal edema
Interstitial pulmonary edema, cerebral edema, ascites, and pleural effusion
What is ascites?
Abnormal fluid buildup in peritoneal cavity
Treatment of edema?
Treat underlying causes
What is lymph edema caused by?
Lymphatic obstruction
Etiology of lymph edema:
-primary
-secondary
-primary: congenital Anomaly, characteristic of turner syndrome
-secondary: tumors, operations, inflammation, trauma, radiation, and elephantiasis
Treatment of lymph edema?
Manual lymphatic drainage or surgery
