ecosystems Flashcards
definition for an ecosystem
-it is made of all of different populations of living organisms
-that interact with one another
-in a defined area
-and the non-living components/physical factors
-present in that region
definition of a population
group of one species in an area in a habitat/ecosystem
difference between a habitat and an ecosystem
a habitat is a part of an ecosystem in which particular organisms live
definition of community
all the populations of different species in the same area at the same time
what do we refer to as the idea that all organisms rely on each other for things like food, seed disposal ,shelter
interdependence
definition of a food chain, what do they show
food chains show simple lines - ONE PATH of energy transfer between organisms
what do food webs show
they show where food chains overlap,
shows the interaction of all pathways of enrgy transfer between organism
what is the difference between a food web and a food chain
A food chain only shows one path of energy transfer,
whereas
a food web shows the interactions of all the energy pathways in the ecosystem.
what does the arrows in them symbolise
they symbolise the energy transfer from one organism to another
what is biomass
Biomass is the mass of living material present in a particular place /in particular organisms
what do all food chains contain, explain how each component is connected to the other
-source of all energy in an ecosystem ,for example the sun
The energy from the sun is harnessed by the producers(plants) ,they absorb the light energy and use it to produce organic molecules such as glucose ,amino acids ,lipids through photosynthesis
-Those organic molecules are then used to build tissue which is the plants biomass
-the energy gained by the producers is transfered to all the other living organism in the food chain
whats meant by an ecosystem being dynamic
it means that an ecosystem is constantly changing ,caused by the living organisms present and the environmental conditions in the region
-remember that all ecosytems are dynamic
what are the type of factors that effect an ecosytem
-biotic factors
-abiotic factors
