Ecosystem Processes Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
Its a chemical reaction that takes place in the chloroplasts to produce glucose.
What is the formula for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water —-> oxygen + glucose
3 examples of the mineral plants need for growth?
- Nitrares=For growth
- Phosphates=For health roots
- Potassium=For healthy leaves and flowers
What does the chlorophyll do?
It absorbs sunlight for photosyenthesis
What is the waxy layers job?
It reduces water loss by evaporation
What is the aerobic (with oxygen) formula for respiration?
glucose + oxygen—–> carbon dioxide + water +(energy)
Why do leaves have a large surface area?
To absorb as much light as possible
What is the formula for (without oxygen) anaerobic respiration (in animals)?
glucose—-> lactic acid (+energy)
What is the formula for fermentation (microorganisms)?
glucose—-> ethanol + carbon dioxide (+energy)
Where does respiration occur?
Mitochondria
Why does anaerobic respiration happen?
This only occurs when there is not enough oxygen for aerobic respiration
What do food chains show?
They show the transfer of energy between organism
What is a herbivore?
Type of consumer that eats the producer
What is a apex predator?
Its the last link in a food chain
What is a producer?
Green plant/algae that makes its own food
