Earthquakes & Plate Tectonics Flashcards
earthquakes
vibrations in the crust
stress
force on rock exerted by folding
strain
bending of rocks near surface
fault
crack in crust where rocks sometimes move and release stress
focus
first point of movement along the fault
epicenter
point directly above the focus on the surface of Earth
Mercalli Scale
used to describe earthquake intensity (descriptions of damage done are included)
Richter Scale
used to describe earthquake magnitude (amount of energy released)
seismograph
instrument used to measure earthquake magnitude
p-wave
Primary Wave: fastest, moves through liquid and solid, push-pull motion, compressional wave
s-wave
Secondary Wave: slower, moves through liquid only, side to side motion, shear wave
