Earthquakes (ch-9.1) Flashcards
Define the epicenter of an earthquake
The point on the Earth’s surface that is directly above the focus (the point of origin) of an earthquake. The epicenter is usually the location where the greatest damage associated with an earthquake occurs.
Defined the focus point of the Earth quake
the point beneath Earth’s surface where rock breaks under stress and the plates shift which cause earthquakes
Define seimometer
another term for seismograph.
Define seismogram
a record produced by a seismograph.
What are the parts of Seismic Waves
Primary waves (P-Waves) Secondary waves (S-Waves) Surface waves
What are the different kinds of faults?
Normal
Reverse
Transform/Strike-Slip
What dose the Richter Scale measure?
Magnitude
For each number of magnitude that you
move up ____ times as much energy as the number before it.
10
What does the Mercalli scale measuring?
Intensity
What are The types of stress at each type of fault?
- Normal (tension- blocks of rock are being pulled apart)
- Reverse (compression- blocks of rock are being pushed together)
- Transformation (shear- blocks of rock are being moved away from each other)
