Earth Structure, plate tectonic theory Flashcards
How thick is the crust at the ocean plates?
approx 5km
How thick is the crust at continental plates?
30-100km
What is the Lithosphere?
Crust and the upper-most solid mantle
What is the mantle?
A zone of molten silicates and other minerals
What is the Asthenosphere?
upper part of the mantle, 80km deep, rocks kept is semi-molten state.
What is the composition of the Asthenosphere?
contains more iron, magnesium and calcium than the crust
What moves the plates?
Convection Currents
How old are oceanic plates?
most are under 200 million years old.
Composition of oceanic plates?
contains silica and magnesium
How old are continental plates?
most are over 1500 million years old
Composition of continental plates?
mainly silica and aluminium and granites
How much of the Earths mass and volume does the mantle take up?
2/3 mass and 5/6 volume
