Earth Science Unit 5 Flashcards
How do sand dunes form?
Sand dunes are formed when wind velocity slows and deposits sand in mounds
What factors affect the amount of sediment a stream carries?
Water velocity and gradient
What is the relationship between velocity of stream flow and
The faster the velocity of stream flow, the higher the discharge
Which agent of erosion transports sediments that form moraines?
Glaciers/Ice
What is the primary agent of erosion in the desert?
Wind
What are striations? How are striations formed? What do striations show?
Striations are parallel grooves in bedrock formed by glaciers dragging sediments over bedrock that show the direction a glacier is moving
Describe physical weathering through frost action
Water seeps into cracks in rock and then freezes, which expands its volume and increases pressure on the surrounding rock. This repetition of melting and freezing eventually splits the rocks apart.
What areas experience the most rock weathering?
Areas with climates that alternate between hot and cold temperatures
What factors affect the water budget?
Temperature, vegetation, wind, and amount of rainfall
How can we tell the direction in which glaciers are moving?
Striations and the thinner ends of drumlins
