What were the economic effects?
Many flights were cancelled which made global airlines lose about 1.1 billion in total
Tens of thousands of people were stranded and could not get to work
Producers of perishable goods were hit hard as their products could not be transported by plane
Nissan suspended production because they could not import components
What were the social effects?
1.2 million passengers a day could not fly
People who lived under flight paths enjoyed the lack of noise for a few days
People with breathing diseases were asked to remain indoors because of the ash
Icelandic farms were damaged and animals were poisoned by the ash
What were the human responses?
The Prime Minister sent 3 navy ships to retrieve Britons who could not return home
Ryanair paid for stranded passengers food and accommodation
Thomas cook sent rescue planes a rescued 2500 passengers
The Icelandic emergency services evacuated hundreds of people from the area
