Uses of oak
Furniture, trimming, boat framing, wooden desks, flooring
Uses of teak
Ship and boat building, decking, rails, hatches, furniture, cabinet making, internal/external joinery, flooring, exterior structure. Also for acid resistance purposes, chemical vats, fume ducts and laboratory benches
Uses of walnut
Used in solid and veneer form for high class furniture and cabinet making. Bank and office fittings. Rifle butts and gun stocks. Turnery and carving, doors, sports goods and fascias
Uses of pine
Furniture, joinery and turnery - best grade. Vehicle bodies. Construction. Carcasing. Railway sleepers etc
Uses of red cedar
Outdoor furniture, beehives, building industry for roofs, exterior walls and panelling. Garages and sheds
Characteristics, properties and features of oak
A hard wood. Deciduous. Produce acorns. Live 200 years plus. Most take 100’s of years to reach maturity. Windsor oak tree over 800 years old. Can be destroyed by fire, carelessness by humans and used for wood. Beetles, fungi and bad weather also destroy them.
Straight grain
Golden brown, light tan to biscuit coloured
Characteristics, properties and features of teak
A hard and moisture-resistant wood. Resists warping and cracking and decay.
Tropical hardwood birches, can grow to height of 30-40m
Lives to 100 years. Can bend in high winds
Teak tree resin has oil in heartwood and highly water resistant, which can protect from decay, insects and bacteria
Brown to dark gold in colour
Strong, durable and attractive grain
Deciduous
Older trees are better quality wood. Trees must be drained (1-2 years)

Hardwood. Fine texture, strong, attractive and easy to work with. Resists shrinking and warpping. Takes all finishes.
21 species, max height 60ft after 20 years. Grows 3ft a year. Blooms mid spring. Deciduous without colour change. Grows fruit - walnuts which are edible. Finest timbers available in Europe
Characteristics, properties and features of pine
Softwood, coniferous and can grow to 45m tall.
Needles grow 1-3 inches. Grows pine cones which has scales sheltering seeds.

It is knotty, strong, easy to work with.
Creamy white and pale yellow
Uniform texture. Finishes well. Resists shrinkage, swelling and warping.
Only species that reproduce from seeds.

Spicy-resinous scented wood, thick ridged, or square cracked bark. Broad level branches. Leaves evergreen and needle like.

Western 150ft, Eastern 50ft.
Light weight, knot free, weak, expensive, reddish brown
