Characteristics, properties and features of oak

A

A hard wood. Deciduous. Produce acorns. Live 200 years plus. Most take 100’s of years to reach maturity. Windsor oak tree over 800 years old. Can be destroyed by fire, carelessness by humans and used for wood. Beetles, fungi and bad weather also destroy them.

A

A hard and moisture-resistant wood. Resists warping and cracking and decay.
Tropical hardwood birches, can grow to height of 30-40m
Lives to 100 years. Can bend in high winds
Teak tree resin has oil in heartwood and highly water resistant, which can protect from decay, insects and bacteria
Brown to dark gold in colour
Strong, durable and attractive grain
Deciduous
Older trees are better quality wood. Trees must be drained (1-2 years)

A

Hardwood. Fine texture, strong, attractive and easy to work with. Resists shrinking and warpping. Takes all finishes.
21 species, max height 60ft after 20 years. Grows 3ft a year. Blooms mid spring. Deciduous without colour change. Grows fruit - walnuts which are edible. Finest timbers available in Europe

A

Softwood, coniferous and can grow to 45m tall.
Needles grow 1-3 inches. Grows pine cones which has scales sheltering seeds.
Gymnosperm - meaning naked seed
It is knotty, strong, easy to work with.
Creamy white and pale yellow
Uniform texture. Finishes well. Resists shrinkage, swelling and warping.
Only species that reproduce from seeds.
Grown in any soil, anywhere
Grown in 6 out of 7 continents
Fully grown pine trees require full sun and little water

A

Softwood, coniferous. 30-40m, occasionally 60m
Spicy-resinous scented wood, thick ridged, or square cracked bark. Broad level branches. Leaves evergreen and needle like.
Eastern and western are the main types

Light weight, knot free, weak, expensive, reddish brown

A

Insulates hand between hand a hot coffee cup preventing burning.
Provides grip due to the ridges.

Why is corrugated card the most suitable?

A

Corrugated layer adds a bit more insulation between hand and cup. The fluted ridges creates a path for heat to escape. Create more grip due to the ridges creating more friction. It can reduce heat to null due to cupboard properties.
