Basic utility and limitations of the DSM?
Utility- Grouped by shared features. includes general checklist and then subtypes/specifiers, associated features (ex loss of libido MDD), age + gender, lab findings, course of illness, prevalence, etc.
limitation- Not all inclusive! not everything meets criteria. Nothing on etiology. Nothing on treatment.
Describe the multiaxial system of the DSM?
five level diagnostic system to classify illnesses and disorders. When considered together, these 5 levels give the treatment provider a complete diagnosis that includes factors influencing your psychiatric condition. This is important for effective treatment planning.
(1-major clinical syndrome, 2-personality disorder, 3-physical disorders relevant, 4-psychosocial +environmental, 5-global assessment of fxn)
