Basic utility and limitations of the DSM?

A

Utility- Grouped by shared features. includes general checklist and then subtypes/specifiers, associated features (ex loss of libido MDD), age + gender, lab findings, course of illness, prevalence, etc.

limitation- Not all inclusive! not everything meets criteria. Nothing on etiology. Nothing on treatment.

Describe the multiaxial system of the DSM?

A

five level diagnostic system to classify illnesses and disorders. When considered together, these 5 levels give the treatment provider a complete diagnosis that includes factors influencing your psychiatric condition. This is important for effective treatment planning.
(1-major clinical syndrome, 2-personality disorder, 3-physical disorders relevant, 4-psychosocial +environmental, 5-global assessment of fxn)

A

Organization of chaps follows developmental lifespan (childhood first)
no more five axes
no more NOS categories
expanded use of severity/course specifiers - more specific diagnosis
changed some groupings
