Mineralglucocorticoids
Fludrocortione - treats adrenal insufficiency
Glucocorticoids
Hydrocortisone - addisons disease/crisis. Adrenal insufficiency or reduce inflammaton.
Used topically for eczema
Prenilasone - taken orally. asthma attack (acute)
Methprednisolone (used for transplant rejection.
Dexamethasone - high anti inflammatory action. Treats cerebal oedemas.
Beclamethasone - asthma inhaler
Unwanted effects of glucocorticoids
Hump, stunted growth, muscle wasting, moon face, hypertension, osteoperosis, increased abdominal fat.
inhaled glucocortisoids - hoarseness/thrush
Withdrawal - gradual or can send someone into addisonian crisis.
Thyroid disease
Goitre - underactive thyroid T3/T4 - insufficient iodine.
Disruption to negative feedback.
Treatment - Thyroxine substitute. Levothyroxine T4
Triodothyronine T3
Lithium
Can result in hypocalcaemia - inadequate ca2 intake. Lack of vit D.
Treatment - calcium cromcororate IV infusion or ergocalciferol (VIT D) or calcitriol.
Hyperthyroidism
Graves disease autoimmune condition. Patients undergo remission. Treatment does not cure the problem.
Carbimazole limits the synthesis of thyroxine. absorbed in gut and converted in liver to active form (pro drug). Excreted in Urine.
Side effect - nausea, vomiting, sore throat, insomnia, mouth ulcers.
