drug metabolism Flashcards
what are the two ways of metabolism ?
anabolism
catabolism
anabolism
assimilation and complex structures from the building blocks of life
what does anabolism require ?
energy
catabolism
breakdown of molecules to obtain the anabolic “building blocks” of life and substrates for energy.
breakdown of molecules to yield energy
what does metabolism do ?
convert drugs to more polar metabolites not readily absorbed in renal tubules, facilitating excretion
what are the two phases of drug metabolism ?
phase 1 - RHS of liver
phase 2 - LHS of liver
what occurs during phase one ?
oxidation, reduction and hydrolysis
makes a drug more polar
adds a chemically reactive group permitting conjugation
what occurs in phase two ?
conjugation
adds an endogenous compound increasing polarity
