Scene
Each time the setting in an act changes, the scene changes. There are several scenes in each act. Act I, Scene 2 or 1.2
Aside
An aside is a remark that is spoken in an undertone and is meant only for the audience
Conflict
Struggle between opposing forces that is the basis of the plot
Internal Conflict- Exists within the character
External Conflict- Exists outside the character
Drama
Literature meant to be performed for an audience
Mood
How the characters feel about their situation
Tone
Found it how the other feels about his characters and subject matter
Chorus
In Shakespeare’s plays the chorus is the narrator
Plot
The sequence of ACTION in a story: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. (Conflict can occur multiple times in the plot).
Setting
The time and place a story occurs
- Verona, Italy
- 1200s/1300s
Soliloquy
A speech one character makes alone on the stage (thinking out loud)
Monologue
A speech one character makes that is directed to other characters
Symbol
Something small representing something large
Theme
The author’s message to a reader
Tragedy
The drama that starts in calm or comedy and ends in tragedy and violence&saddness
Willing Suspension of Disbelief
The audience tacitly agrees to set aside disbelief
