16
Q

When it comes to tablets?

A

It is safest and most accurate to give the fewest number of whole, undivided tablets possible. Only scored tablets can be divided.
The max number of tablets or capsules for a single dose is usually 3, check calc is dose requires more

17
Q

Parenteral dosage;

Round the amount to be administered to tenths if the amount is?

A

Greater than 1 mL and measured in a 3 mL syringe. (1.53 rounds to 1.5)

18
Q

Parenteral dosage;

Round the amount to be administered to hundredths if the amount is?

A

Less than 1 mL and all amounts less than 0.5 mL in a 1 mL syringe (0.257 mL rounds to 0.26 mL)

19
Q

Amounts ____, calculated in tenths can be accurately measured in what?

A

Amounts 0.5-1 mL

Measured in either a 1 mL or 3 mL syringe

20
Q

Maximum dosing volumes for IM injections?

A

Average adult 150 lb: 3 mL, max for deltoid site is 1 mL
Children ages 6-12: 2 mL
Children birth to 5: 1 mL

21
Q

H and Q represent what? D is what?

A

H and Q are nurse supply dosage. H is dosage on hand per a quantity.
D is the doctor’s order.

22
Q

When solving problems for drugs supplied in tablets or capsules, Q is always what?

A

Q is always 1 because the supply dosage is per 1 tablet or capsule.

23
Q

When solving problems for drugs supplied in liquid form you must calculate what?

A

Calculate the volume of the liquid that contains the prescribed dosage of the drug.
Because the supply dosage noted may indicate the amount of drug per 1 mL or something, like 125 mg per 5 mL.

24
Q

What are examples of oral and parenteral equipment?

A

Oral: cup, calibrated dropper, pediatric oral devices
Parenteral: 3 mL syringe, prefilled single dose syringe, insulin syringe, 1 mL syringe, safety syringe, intravenous syringe

25
Q

What size is the medicine cup?
At what size should a smaller device be used?
How mL is a dram?

A

30 mL, 1 fl oz
At volumes less than 2.5 mL, use a smaller and more accurate device.
1 dram is 4 mL

26
Q

What is a calibrated dropper used for?

What calibration does it normally use?

A

Small quantities, medications for children and adults, dispense eye and ear medications, adding small quantities to liquid
Calibration is usually in mL or drops(gtt)

27
Q

What are oral syringes missing?

A

Luerlock hub and a cap on the tip

Used for oral medications on children

28
Q

Explain usage of parenteral devices

A

Route of administration is by injection. Includes syringes and IV catheters. Must use principles of rounding to ensure safety and accuracy.

29
Q

3 mL syringe

A

Calibrations read from top of the black ring of suction plunger. Calibrated in tenths of a milliliter.

30
Q

Prefilled syringe

A

Use only once and then discard. Discard any extra medication prior to injection.

31
Q

1 mL/tuberculin/TB syringe

A

Administer small doses. Calibrated in hundredths (0.01) of a milliliter with each one tenth (0.1) labeled on the metric scale. Preferred to give dosages of less than 0.5 mL

32
Q

U-100 insulin syringe

A

For U-100 insulin only. Syringe may be a standard U-100 or a Lo-dose U-100 for smaller doses.

33
Q

Safety syringes

A

Needle is protected by a shield. Used to protect from injury.

34
Q

Intravenous syringe

A

Used to prepare a medication for IV administration. Examine calibrations and select the best syringe based upon volume.

35
Q

Needleless syringe system

A

Used to prevent needle sticks during IV medication administration
