Victim Safety Plan
- While living with abusive partner (Somewhere safe inside home, Plan w/ children, keep important documents easily accessible, call 911 get emergency restraining order, call local domestic violence shelter)
- Preparing to leave (Make plan of how to leave, take pictures of injuries & damages to property from abuse, journal dates of incidents, put together safe bag for self and children, second set of car keys, medications for self & children, legal documents, set money aside, if possible, write down crucial information, arrangements for animals)
- Once they leave (Emergency shelter, address confidentiality program, emergency phone from victim service agency, restraining order

Three Responsibilities for Officer Responding to Domestic Violence
- Provide physical safety & security
- Help victims by coordinating their referrals to support services
- Arrest Domestic violence perpetrator required by law
Victim vs Survivor
Victim:
May imply vulnerability ongoing harm or a lack of agency
Medical and law enforcement terms to describe someone who was subject to abuse
Survivor:
Center on the individual’s resilience, strength, and recovery journey
Empowerment —-> Affirms agency growth and the ability to overcome trauma

- Attempting to cause physical harm
- Placing another in fear of imminent serious physical harm
- Causing another to engage involuntarily in sexual relations by force, threat or duress
