Local Broadcast
An announcement made on a local network, requesting the IP address for the system assigned to a specific NetBIOS, or host name. It is commonly referred to as a B-node broadcast. This method of name resolution will use a lot of bandwidth and it cannot be used on a routed network because broadcast packets are blocked by network routers.
Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)
Commonly implemented as a WINS server, this type of name resolution service delivers NetBIOS or host name resolution from a server that’s running it. WINS servers were used ONLY on Microsoft Windows networks that need NetBIOS name to IP address name resoltion. Today they are only used in older networks that still maintain a Windows NT server.
LMHOSTS file
This file is a static text file that contains entries which map IP addresses to NetBIOS names. This file can be used to resolve NetBIOS names to IP addresses on small older networks that do not have a WINS server. Similar to HOSTS
