DNA Structure Flashcards
what did Haeckel do and in what year?
proposed that the nucleus contained hereditary material and in 1866
what did flemming do and in what year?
descried behaviour of chromosomes during mitosis in 1970’s
what was Griffiths aiming to do?
develop a vaccine against streptococcus pneumoniae
what did Griffiths do in his first experiment?
used strains with varying virulence, heat killed an S strain and injected into mice
what did Griffiths do in his second experiment?
used a less virulent relative of the S strain and injected this once killed along with live R
what did Griffiths experiments tell him?
he only found live S in the mice so therefore there must be a transforming principle
what did Avery, McLeod and mccarty do?
treated each strain with an enzyme to inhibit each cellular molecule to find the transforming principle
what did Hershey and chase do?
radiolabelled protein coats and the DNA to find out which contained genetic material
what is a nucleoside?
nucleotide without the phosphate group
where is the base attached in a nucleotide?
1’
where is the phosphate group attached?
5’
what are the pyrimidines?
bases with 1 ring such as C and T
what are purines?
bases with 2 rings such as A and G
what are the components of a eukaryote genome?
regulatory elements, 5’ UTR, gene and the 3’ UTR
what is a nucleosome?
octamer core of histones linked together with linker DNA
