DNA replication Flashcards
Why must chromosomes make copies of themselves?
-so when cells divide, each daughter cell receives an exact copy of the genetic information
What is the copying of DNA called?
-replication
Where does replication of the DNA occur?
-takes place in the nucleus during interphase
The three possibilities for DNA replication
-conservative replication
-semi-conservative replication
-dispersive replication
Conservative replication
-where the parental double helix remains intact and a whole new double helix is made
Semi conservative replication
-where the parental double helix separates into two strands, each acts as a template for synthesis of a new strand
Dispersive replication
-two new double helices contain fragments from both strands of the parental double helix
