DNA Recombination Flashcards
T-Cell Lymphoma
viral integration in humans mediated by site-specific recombination
Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML)
chromosomal translocation of 22 and 9 resulting in Philadelphia chromosome (diagnostic for CML) (gene fusion on BCR breakpoint cluster region…uncontrolled kinase activity)
myelo=bone marrow. bone marrow replaced with MYELOBLASTS
hepatomegaly. splenomegaly (from anemia). decreased RBC (anemia) and platelet. Elevated WBC. immature leukemic WBCs.
infection. pain below ribs.
diag: <10% myeloblasts in blood
Imatinib. first anti-protein kinase. inhibits phosphorylation. lethal to CML cells
Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML)
Blood cell cancer due to chromosomal translocation of 22 and 9 resulting in Philadelphia chromosome (diagnostic for CML) (gene fusion on BCR breakpoint cluster region…uncontrolled kinase activity)
myelo=bone marrow. bone marrow replaced with MYELOBLASTS
hepatomegaly. splenomegaly (from anemia). decreased RBC (anemia) and platelet. Elevated WBC. immature leukemic WBCs.
infection. pain below ribs.
diag: >20% blasts in blood. blast crisis. months to live
Imatinib. first anti-protein kinase. inhibits phosphorylation. lethal to CML cells
Burkitt Lymphoma
cancer due to chromosomal translocation of 8/14, 8/22, or 8/2. 8 contains c-Myc protooncogene. elevated c-myc in B-cells. B-cell lymphoma. fast growing form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. swollen lymph nodes. majority male.
Central Africa.
non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
cancer due to chromosomal translocation of 8/14, 8/22, or 8/2. 8 contains c-Myc protooncogene. elevated c-myc in B-cells. B-cell lymphoma. swollen lymph nodes. majority male.
Central Africa.
