DNA fingerprinting- paternity testing and forensics Flashcards
1
Q
what is it
A
process where individuals can be identified and compared based on their DNA sequence or DNA profile
requires matching an unkown sample of DNA to a known sample of DNA to see if they match.
2
Q
what is RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism)
A
where organisms may be differentiated by analysis of patterns derived from cleavage of their DNA
3
Q
how do they know everyone’s DNA is unique
A
when a persons DNA is cut by RE, the length of the fragments will be different for everyone
4
Q
procedure
A
- scientist amplify specific sequences from more than one dna sample (by PCR)
- these amplified pieces are cut by RE
- gel electrophoresis
if patterns similar = related
the less similar, the less related.
