DNA code Flashcards
What is the code on DNA?
The sequences of bases along it
How is DNA code read?
In codons
What are codons?
Sets of 3 bases
How is new DNA made for new cells?
The code is replicated
How is the code used in transcription?
The code can be copied onto messenger RNA
How is the code used in translation?
The messenger RNA can be used by the ribosome to join a string of amino acids together.
How can substances be separated?
By gel electrophoresis
What is gel electrophoresis?
Placing substances in a gel and passing an electric current through the gel to carry the substance along
What causes the speed of substances?
The charge and cell
How is DNA charged?
It is negatively charged?
What is the effect of the charge on DNA?
It moves to the positive end of the gel
What is mRNA made of?
A single strand of nucleotides
What is the structure of tRNA?
It is 80 nucleotides long so the chain made of folded up RNA and stabilised by hydrogen bonds between complementary bases
How is tRNA shown simplified?
As a hairpin
What does tRNA have on the ends?
An amino acid attachment site on one end and an anticodon on the opposite end
