Diversity Within A Community Flashcards
What’s biodiversity
The general term used to describe the variety in the living world, it refers to the number and variety of living organisms in a particular area
What are he 3 components of biodiversity and explain them
Species diversity - refers to the number of different species and the number of individuals of each species within any one community
Genetic diversity - refers to the variety of genes possessed by the individuals that make up a population of a species
Ecosystem - refers to the range of different habitats, from a small local habitat to the whole of the earth
What is a measure of species diversity
Species richness - what percent of a species lives there
How do we measure the index of diversity
D=N(N-1) / the sum of n(n-1)
D-index of diversity
N- total number of organisms of all species
n- total number of organisms of each species
Explain why it is more useful to calculate a species diversity index than just record the number of species present
It measures both the number of species and the number of individuals. It therefore takes account of species that are only present in small numbers
