Disturbances in Digestion Flashcards
unpleasant feeling or desire to vomit
Nausea
forceful expulsion of gastric contents
Vomiting
Sudden onset, occult bleeding
Upper GI bleeding
Most common causative factor of upper GI bleeding
Gastritis
primary tool to diagnose source of UGIB
Endoscopy
Inflammation of the Gastric or stomach mucosa
Gastritis
Ulceration, hallowing, excavation and erosion of mucosal wall of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum
Peptic Ulcer Disease
superficial erosion, short duration, resolve quickly, minimal inflammation
Acute PUD
long duration, months to lifetime, erode muscular wall, form fibrous ulcer tissue, tissue scarring
Chronic PUD
Most common bacterial infection of PUD
H. Pylori
burning, gaseous pain, foods tends to worsen with pain, abdominal discomfort occurs 1-2 hours after meals; high epigastric pain
Gastric ulcer
burning cramplike pain, abdominal discomfort occurs 1-2 hours after meals; midepigastric and back pain
Duodenal ulcer
gold standard to diagnose H. pylori (by-product is urea)
Biopsy, urease breath test, stool antigen test
most accurate and preferred diagnostic procedure; directly view the mucosa, monitor ulcer healing
Endoscopy
protective barrier coating over ulcer
Sucralfate
