Distance and displacement Flashcards
which unit is used to measure: the temperature of boiling water
degrees Celsius (0C)
which unit is used to measure: the speed of a moving train
kilometres per hour (km/h)
which unit is used to measure: the length of a running track
metres (m)
which unit is used to measure: the force needed to push an object
Newtons (N)
which unit is used to measure: the time to swim 50 m
seconds (s)
define scalar quantities
Scalar quantities have magnitude (size) only.
examples of scalar quantities
age - 12 years
time - 30 s
mass - 40 kg
define vector quantities
Vector quantities have both magnitude (size) and direction.
examples of vector quantities
displacement - 30 m east
force - 5 N south
what is distance in physics
In Physics, distance describes how far an object travels.
what is displacement
Displacement describes the change in position of the object and the direction of movement.
what two things does displacement compare
displacement compares the starting position with the end position
what are distance and displacement measured in
they are both measured in meters (m) however displacement also involves a direction for movement
what does displacement time graphs show
they show the change in displacement over a period of time. they show the change in position relative to a particular point, usually the starting position.
what is on the y and x axis
the time is on the x axis and displacement is on the y axis
