Diseases caused by Smoking Flashcards
1
Q
Heart disease
A
- smoking causes a person’s arteries to become blocked.
- This prevents blood flowing properly, and can cause a HEART ATTACK or STROKE.
2
Q
Lung disease
A
-Chemicals in tobacco smoke affect the alveoli in your lungs.
-Their walls become weakened so they do not inflate properly when you inhale.
-They may also burst during coughing.
This reduces the amount of oxygen that can pass into the blood, making the person breathless.
-This disease is known as EMPHYSEMA.
3
Q
Respiratory infections
A
- Chemicals in tobacco smoke stop the cilia (tiny hairlike structure in windpipe lining to protect the air passage) from moving.
- This allows mucus to flow into your lungs, making it harder to breathe and often causing infection.
- Smokers cough this mucus up, which can damage the lungs further.
