la comedia romantica y el cliche

A
  • delicate balance of romance and comedy successfully achieved by the director.
  • many of cliches of the genre are present in the film eg., amaia leaving her bag and mobile phone in Rafa’s flat, fate dictates that rafa must find his love and return them.
  • amaia dismisses rafa from outset; falls for him eventually just at the point when rafa decides to return to Sevilla.
  • ending is similarly cliched; amaia surprising rafa in Sevilla, declaring her love to him in a horse-drawn carriage.

Q

la comedia y la farsa

A
  • success of the film hinges on the comedic element; comedy in this film takes many forms.
  • rafa and his friends engage in fast, entertaining dialogue - with many humorous observations on regional stereotypes familiar to the Spanish viewer.
  • in their first encounter, rafa and amaia blend dialogue that is full of spark and wit with slapstick humour - rafa dragon amaia upstairs to throw her out of the bar for her abuse; she stubbornly resists.
  • when rafa arrives in Basque Country, comedy developed into farce - lies become more intricate and difficult to maintain.
  • convinces young men he is part of a terrorist cell,
  • despite some highly implausible claims, instigating very vocal political protest in the streets.
  • leads koldo to believe he is a man of pure Basque heritage by unconvincingly spluttering surnames of Basque celebrities.
  • makes all of these efforts in an attempt to keep up with his persona and win amaia’s heart - as he stumbles from one disaster to the next, the audience in turn cringes, laughs and supports him on the journey.

Q

la cinematografia

A
  • majority of techniques used serve to highlight the regional differences.
opening scene = camera pans across Guadalquivir river to bring us a flavour of Sevilla at night.
  • iconic buildings e.g., el Torre del Oro appear in shot; many lights give us hint of vibrant nightlife.
  • the flamenco bar is filled with bright colours, designs
  • some striking such = the costumes and makeup of the dancers
  • some subtle = patterned tiles on the wall.

ending of the film brings action back to the banks of the river in Sevilla, at the flamenco bar and as the happy couple rides off into the distance, scene is bathed in the light of sunny blue skies overhead.

as rafa makes his journey north, the landscape changes and camera pans across rolling green hills, wild beaches and rugged peaks beneath grey skies.
- the weather may quickly take a turn for the worst - storm breaking out as rafa reads the sine ‘euskadi ongi etorri’
- beauty of the region highlighted throughout.

  • game of pelota vasca in a beautiful square, with a picturesque chapel and houses full of character.
  • rafa stops at mural that says ‘utszi paean euskal hernia’ (leave the Basque Country in peace)
  • omen for his own intentions?
  • on entering amaia’s home, the mise-en-scene is striking
  • lack of natural light through small windows
  • dark, heavy stable door; austere furnishings
  • windswept port contrasts sharply with the calmness of the Guadalquivir river in Sevilla.
  • Basque flags hanging from balconies, in bars and even on amaia’s mobile phone case.

el vestuario

A
  • all characters have a style that befits a stereotype

rafa and his friends = smart-casual manner, shirts, polo shirts, chinos, loafers and plenty of hair gel.
- in Basque Country, there is an edgier look rafa must adhere to if he wants to convince Koldo of his Basque heritage.
- as he arrives in argoitia, his classic Andalusian style stands out; immediately a young man casts a glance his way, gives him puzzled look.

  • when rafa enters the restaurant dressed as a typical Basque man; dark, loose-fitting clothing, earring, unkempt hair and a scar around his neck - there is theatrical, pantomime feel to the scene
  • this makes viewers laugh at his over the top change in appearance.
  • visual comedy returns when Joaquin and curro travel to Basque Country and se Rafa dress anachronistically - confusing mix of Basque and Andalusian garments.

amaia’s clothes also have a big role:
- rafa falls for her dressed as a tradiitional Andalusian beauty
- but confused when she’s dressed very differently at home in Argoitia.
- remarks that her fringe looks like it has been chopped with an axe
- and her clothes are plain and shapeless.

main themes of regional differences and comedy are Brough to the fore effectively via the emphasis on costume design.

la musica

A
  • soundtrack serves to highlight regional differences.

start of the film:
- we see several people in typical flamenco dress; dancing a lively sevillana to the rhythm of the Spanish guitar and clapping.

in Basque Country:
- more sombre and restrained music
- interrupted with heavy percussion sounds and imposing thuds and bangs e.g., the repeated slamming nd bolting of amaia’s stable door.

original technique used = the mobile phone ringtones
- reinforce stereotypes and influence the storyline
- Rafa’s true identity is nearly exposed
- amaia, rafa, koldo and merche are having dinner downstairs and ‘Sevilla tiene un color especial’ blazes out of his phone upstairs.

  • amaia’s mobile phone rings with a simple, functional, harsh tone when she uses it to speak to her father; conversation is similarly brief and blunt.
  • most prominent use of music in the film is in the final scene:
  • Los Del Rio sing Rafa’s favourite sevillana as the couple’s carriage heads towards the Triana neighbourhood of Sevilla.

when the end credits roll, the song ‘no te marches jamas’ can be heard - sung as a duet from a Basque singer and an Andalusian singer.
- use of these performers (one Basque, female, other Andalusian and male) evokes amaia and rafa.j
- first verse is sung in Basque - language rarely heard in mainstream music
- song mixes pop rock with flamenco guitar.
