Dimensional/Scale/Dynamic Flashcards
1
Q
Variables for dimensional analysis
A
- lengths
- velocities
- densities (and gravity)
- viscosity
- pressure (only in pipe flow)
2
Q
Dimension of viscosity
A
L2T-1
3
Q
Dimension of pressure
A
ML-1T-2
4
Q
Dimension of gravity
A
LT-2
5
Q
Important forces
A
gravity = ρg
pressure = -∇p
viscous = µ∇2u
6
Q
reynolds number
A
UL/v
7
Q
Dimensional Analysis Process
A
- write down dependant and independent variables and their dimensions
- choose repeating variables (not viscosity and not be able to form a dimensionless group themselves)
- form dimensionless groups
- write function of dimensionless groups
8
Q
Scale Analysis
A
find out some terms are unimportant and ignore them (trying to get 2 forces)
9
Q
Scale Analysis Process
A
- choose values for velocity and length scales
- sub into eqn (remove all + - and =s)
- divide all terms by inertial term U2/L
- Sub in order of magnitude estimates
- remove insignificant terms (1000 times smaller)
10
Q
Dynamic Similarity
A
All dimensionless parameters must be equal
11
Q
Dynamic Similarity Process
A
- get values for actual and experimental parameters
- use dimensionless numbers to solve for unknowns
- Calculate Re for all
- if all the same (or all sufficiently large >10,000) they are dynamically similar
12
Q
How to make things dynamically similar
A
- change viscosity
- instead of scaling dimensions use similar aspect ratio
