What is a Digital Device?
A Digital Device is an electronic device that uses digital data.
What is a multifunctional device?
These devices can perform multiple functions. e.g. inputting and outputting devices.
Example: Touchscreen
What is a personal computer?
Small and inexpensive computers for individual use.
Example: Desktops and Laptops

What are mobile devices?
Made to give people computer and internet access while on the go
Example: Smartphones and Tablets
What is a Server?
Powerful computers which provide services to other computers connected to a network
Example: Mail Server

What is an entertainment system?
Devices designed for watching TV/Films, listening to music and playing video games.
Example: Games consoles
What is a digital camera?
Capture images and videos digitally using an image sensor and stores them as digital data on media.
Example: Video cameras
What is a navigation system?
They use GPS to locate the user’s position on a digital map and provide directions to a given location.
Example: In-car satnav
What are communication devices and systems?
They can send and receive analogue or digital data to and from another device.
Example: Analogue - Phones, Digital - Router
What are data capture and collection systems?
They collect and input data through automated systems.
Examples: Barcode Scanner, Optical Mark reader, Electronic point of sales (EPOS)
Why are digital devices developed?
To make everyday tasks easier, quicker or more cost-effective.
To provide efficient, improved access to data.
What is a web server?
Web servers store web pages and online content and serve data to users over the internet.
What are force feedback game controllers?
They are multifunctional devices and they can input data and output vibration.
What are Wi-Fi dongles?
They are communication devices that allow your PC to communicate with a router wirelessly.
What does a barcode scanner do?
It is an example of a data capture and collection system. They input a barcode and converts the information into data.
What is an optical mark reader?
It is a data capture and collection system. It reads pencil or pen marks on specially designed printed forms.
e.g. lottery tickets
What is an EPOS?
It is a data capture and collection system. It stands for Electronic point of sale system. It records sales and updates stock levels.
What is an RFID reader?
It reads data stored in a smart card by being in close proximity to the card
