The digestive system consists of?
A six to seven metre long tube known as either the digestive tract or the gut.
Stomach
Mechanical digestion starts here.
Chemical digestion of carbohydrates starts here.
Large intestine
Strong acid helps to digest proteins to kill bacteria.
Mouth
Digestion begins in the mouth, where teeth bite, cut and grind food into smaller pieces.
Oesophagus
This structure is long, but narrow. Useful nutrients pass through the wall into the body where they are taken by the blood cells.
Small intestine
This is the tube that carries the chewed food from the mouth to the stomach.
Duodenum
This is the start of the small intestine, tubes from the pancreas, liver and gall bladder join the digestive tract, allowing bile to enter.
Anus
A ring-like muscle is normally closed but opens when faeces needs to pass.
