Digestion Flashcards
What is chemical digestion
Involves breaking larger molecules into smaller ones using enzymes. Each enzyme is specific
What is mechanical digestion
Happens in the mouth as our teeth cut and grind food. Also happens when our stomach churns
What are the 3 types of enzymes
Amylase
Protease
Lipase
What does amylase do
Starch— glucose
What does protease do
Protein— amino acids
What does lipase do
Fat— fatty acids and glycerol
What are the 5 stages of digestion
Ingestion
Digestion
Absorption
Assimilation
Egestion
What is ingestion and where does it happen
Eating/taking food into your mouth
Mouth and teeth
What is digestion and where does it happen
Breaking food down into smaller substances that can enter the blood.
Stomach
Duodenum
Pancreas
Gallbladder
What is absorption and where does it happen
When the soluable substances enter the blood stream
Small intestine
What is assimilation and where does it happen
Soluble products in the blood enter the body cells/organs where they are used
Organ where needed
What is egestion and where does it occur
Removal of waste food
Rectum
Anus
What does the mouth do
Food is chewed. Saliva contains amylase to digest carbohydrates.
What does the oesophagus do
It’s a muscular tube that pushes food along by peristalsis.
What does the stomach do
Mechanical and chemical digestion occurs here. Acid is produced to kill bacteria
