What is the derivative?
The instantaneous rate of change, the value approached as Δx approaches 0
Why are constants dropped form derivatives?
Constant parameters in functions do not affect its rate of change over time
What is the derivative of y=e^x
dy/dx= e^x
What is the chain rule?
When you try to multiply
dy/du x du/dx
What is the derivative of y=ln x?
dy/dx= 1/x
What is differentiation used for?
Finding the roots and turning points
Turning point:
Differentiate to get dy/dx
Then it is when dy/dyx=0
What are critical points?
Points on a curve where the gradient is 0
These can be maximum or minimum turning points or points of inflection
What is a point of inflection?
Indicates where the curve gradient reaches maximum or minimum
