Heart disease definition
Main cause is atherosclerosis - build up of fatty and fibrous material on inside of arteries. Narrows artery and impedes blood flow to body tissues and blood clots can form
Symptoms of heart disease
Depend on which specific condition however common symptoms are: Shortness of breath Nausea Chest pain (angina) Palpitations - fluttering in chest Fast heartbeat Weakness/dizziness Sweating
Diabetes type 2 definition
Group of conditions where there is too much glucose in the blood
Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas it allows glucose to travel from the blood to the body cells
Diabetes occurs when:
- the body cannot produce enough
- it can’t produce any
- it doesn’t work
Type 2 is most common occurs when not enough insulin/insulin doesn’t work
Obesity definition
Abnormal/excessive fat accumulation that may impair health/wellbeing
Accumulated when we don’t use the kilojoules we consume. Calculated by BMI - weight over height squared
