Diesels Vs Petrols Flashcards
Describe the cycle of a Diesel engine.
4 Stroke Cycle (Intake, Combustion, Power, Exhaust)
Describe the cycle of a Petrol engine.
2 Stroke Cycle (Combustion, Power)
Describe how a Petrol engine works.
A petrol engine takes in a mixture of fuel and air, compressed it and ignites the mixture with a spark.
Describe how a Diesel engine works.
Takes in just air, compresses it and then injects fuel into the compressed air. The heat of the compressed air ignites the fuel.
What is the ratio for compressed air in diesel engines?
Typically around 14 to 24 times it’s original volume.
What is the ratio for compressed air in petrol engines?
Around 7 to 10 times it’s original volume, high performance engines may have a higher compression ratio of up to 13.
