Q

Describe the development of ketoacidosis

A
  1. When nutrients are scarce body relies on fat stores
to break down into fatty acids (lipolysis)
  2. FFA are converted into ketone bodies in the liver which provide energy for the brain
  3. In type 1 the lack of insulin means that ketone body uptake is reduced leaving it in the blood
  4. They build up in the plasma and create life threatning acidosis because they are acidic
