Diabetes Insulin Flashcards
1
Q
Regular Insulin
A
- Rapid, Short acting
- 1 hr, peak=2-4, 5-8 hr duration
- can be give IV
2
Q
NPH(Isophane)
A
- Slower Absorption
- NOT GIVEN IV
- Duration=18-24
- Glucose control between meals
- DOES NOT REQUIRE AN RX, neither does reg insulin
*
3
Q
Lispro(Humalog)
A
- Less aggregation and more rapid effect than Reg
- shorter duration
- Kinetics similar to endogenous insulin
- less hypoglycemia risk
-
GIVEN IV or SubQ
*
4
Q
Aspart(Novolog
A
- Like Lispro, duration=slightly longer
- IV or Sub Q
5
Q
Glulisine(Apidra)
A
- Like Aspart and Lispro
- AFTER** **meal
- IV and SubQ
6
Q
Glargine(Lantus)
A
- decreased aggregation
- LONG DURATION, SLOW ABSORPTION
- Peakless, Flat Pharmokinetics
- pH=4, shouldnt be mixed in same syringe as other insulins that have pH=7
7
Q
Detemir(Levemir)
A
- _ULTRA LONG LASTING _
- Fatty acid chain that binds albumin to prolong action further
- Neutral pH, STILL DONT MIX WITH OTHER INS
-
Better and less variable than Glargine
*
8
Q
Pramlintide
A
- Analog of amylin, agonist
- Decrease post meal glucose
-
SLOWS GASTRIC emptying, and increase Satiety
- Eat less, less glucose to deal with
- WEIGHT LOSS!!!
- Injected SubQ
- Adverse: Nausea, headache, increase risk of hypoglycemia
*
