A

It is thought to be caused by a depletion of brain neurotransmitters

A

It can affect anyone but generally more women (2.5:1)

Risk Factors (9)

A

Female, pregnancy (post-natal), previous episode, significant physical illness causing pain or disability, bereavement, abuse, other mental health problems e.g Dementia, afro-caribbean, refugees/asylum seekers

Symptoms (12)

A

Persistent sadness/low mood, loss of interest/pleasure in most activities, fatigue/loss of energy, worthlessness, excessive guilt, recurrent thoughts of death/suicide, lack of concentration, psychomotor agitation, insomnia/hypersomnia, changes in appetite, weight loss, loss/increased libido

Careful monitoring, CBT/Counselling, Relaxation therapy, Antidepressant e.g Fluoexetine, Citalopram, Cirtraline (SSRIs)

Complications (3)

A

Impaired Quality of Life due to stigma, loss of employment, marital break up etc, Increased mortality risk esp in men due to suicide, increased risk of Coronary Heart Disease

Is there a good prognosis?

A

Average length of a depressive episode is 6-8 months, 80% of patients experience a second episode, only 1/3 remain well over 11 years
