Deposit feeders Flashcards
How do deposit feeders feed?
Consume detritus or litter by collecting surface material.
What kind of structures aid deposit feeders?
They do not require elaborate structures, some are completely unspecialized. Some use tentacles or extensible proboscis.
What are two problems with deposit feeding?
1) Organic material may comprise only a small proportion of the background sediment
2) Much of the organic material may be the relative refractory and indigestible residue which have accumulated.
What kind of guts do deposit feeders have?
Unspecialized and long intestines.
What is the benefit of a long intestine?
More SA for absorption.
What is tagmatization?
Identical segmentation.
How is the Amphitrite tagmatized?
Head, trunk, tail.
How does the amphitrite use their tentacles to feed?
Tentacles creep over sea bottom by ciliary action, bits of pieces of organic material are trapped in mucous and moved toward mouth by ciliary tracts. Particles are sorted by the epitomical lips and are either digested or ingested.
Are Amphitrites direct or indirect deposit feeders?
Indirect.
Are earthworms indirect or direct deposit feeders?
Direct.
What are the functions of the earthworm gut?
Food procurement, storage, hydrolysis, absorption, reclamation, feces storage. Regionally specialized.
What composes the foregut of the earthworm?
Buccal cavity, pharynx, esophagus, crop, gizzard.
