Density Flashcards
1
Q
Appreciate the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic properties
A
- Intrinsic value = independant of dimensions
- Extrinsic value = property changes with dimensions
2
Q
Explain why density is an intrinsic property
A
- The density of a substance remains the same whether the substance has a larger or lower amount
- E.g the density of water will remain the same for a glass of water and a litre
3
Q
Define density as:
Units:
A
𝜌 = 𝑚 / 𝑉
Measured in kilograms per cubic metre
4
Q
Use the density equation:
A
Rearrange it to have:
* mass = density x volume
* volume = mass / density
5
Q
Density of air, water and metals
A
Densities:
* Air: 1.204 kgm^-3
* Water: 997 kgm^-3
* Metals: mostly 2 - 20x10^3 kgm^-3
