what is delusional disorder?
- patients have a crystallized, often single delusion
- they don’t have hallucinations or thought disorder like schizophrenia
- often have normal lives
what is Capgras delusion?
patient feels someone has been placed by an imposter
-only one imposter
what is Fregoli delusion?
patient holds delusional belief that different people are the same person who changes appearance
-possibly lesions in right temporal lobe and fusiform gyrus
what is psychopathic cannibalism?
antisocial personality, psychopathy, sociopathy with delusions (if you eat a certain part of the body of a certain person, they will gain that person’s abilities)
what is folie a deux (shared delusion disorder, zombiesm)
symptoms of a delusional belief are transmitted from one individual to another
-if shared by more than 2 people, it can be called folie a ___
who is the folie imposee VS simultanee?
imposee: likely has the delusion (leader)
simultanee: incorporates delusion into his/her life
are religions psychotic disorders?
no, but some cults could be
what is Cotard’s delusion?
depersonalization-derealization disorder
-delusion that one is dead, don’t exist, or is missing organs
what is Krokodil?
desomorphine
- heroin-like drug that rots flesh and bone
- destroys a user’s tissue, turning skin scaly and green
- -festering sores, abscesses, and blood poisoning
what is Morgellons/delusional parasitosis?
somatic/paranoid delusion
-patient believes they are infested and can see or often feel parasites in or on them
what are erotomanic delusions?
delusion in which the affected person believes that another person (usually famous) is in love with them
- occurs during psychosis, especially in patients with schizophrenia, delusional disorder, or bipolar mania
- imagines secret admirer is declaring affection by various means
- -when confronted with truth, they dismiss as ploy of admirers to keep relationship secret
- stalking is delusional, but no secondary gain
what is treatment for these delusions?
they are psychotic, so assumed they have too much mesolimbic DA (like in schizophrenia)
- antipsychotics are sometimes effective, but oftentimes not
- psychotherapy may help patients cope, lower anxiety, agitation, or responding to these symptoms if antipsychotics fail
- be non-judgmental, non-incredulous, non-challenging, empathic, and facilitate communication
