delay Flashcards
what is analogue tape delay
recording into a tape loop via a record head and replayed through playback heads
what are the parameters of analogue tape delay
the delay time could be changed by moving the playback head or running the tape slower
what is bucket brigade delay
analogue technology used in 70s guitar pedals- works through a series of capacitators that hold charge- each stage of the delay ‘hands off’ charge to the next delay
what is bucket brigade delay like
the longer the delay, the more degradation of the signal and the noisier the delayed output
what is digital delay
it stores the signal in memory and because it is stored digitally, it can be manipulated
when was digital delay common
hardware digital delays common in 70s and 80s with digital delay plugins from the late 90s
what is slapback delay
a single, quick repeat of the sound at the same volume as the original signal
how long is slapback delay
80-150ms
what is ping pong delay
delayed signal bounces back and forth between the left and right channels
what is multi tap delay
digital delay that creates complex, rhythmic patterns by using multiple independent delays
what is reverse delay
works by delaying the signal then reversing the delayed signal so that it plays backwards
what is ADT (automatic double tracking)
a tape delay is used to simulate double-tracking using only one recording
what does ADT (automatic double tracking) sound like
the effect of doubling voices or instruments without the need for a musician to overdub their part
