Definitions Flashcards
Tissue
A collection of differentiated cells that have a specialised function or functions in an organism.
Exocytosis
The bulk transport of materials out of cells. Vesicles containing the material fuse with the cell-surface membrane and the contents are released to the outside of the cell.
Endocytosis
The bulk transport of materials into cells via invagination of the cell-surface membrane forming a vesicle.
Translocation
Movement of assimilates from source to sink
Natural active immunity
Normal immune response to the presence of pathogens
Natural passive immunity
Babies receiving immunity from its mother as a TEMPORARY defence - antibodies via placenta and antibodies in the mothers milk
Artificial passive immunity
Taking antibodies produced by another organism and injecting them into the bloodstream - short term immunity
Artificial active immunity
Vaccination or immunisation- injecting ‘safe’ antigens into the bloodstream or muscle tissue
Species richness
Number of species in a habitat
Species evenness
Abundance of each species
