Definitions Flashcards
Anti-addition
An addition reaction in which two substituents are added to opposite sides (or faces) of a double bond or triple bond.
Syn-addition
The addition of two substituents to the same side (or face) of a double or triple bond reduces the bond order but increases the number of substituents.
Achiral
symmetric in such a way that it can be superimposed on its mirror image; not chiral.
Mesocompound
An achiral compound with chiral centres is known as a meso compound & has an internal plane of symmetry that makes it superimposable on its mirror image (is inactive)
Enantiomers
non-superposable mirror images (all change)
Diastereomers
non-mirrored stereoisomers (not all change)
Electrophile
+ charge, low e- density
Nucleophile
- charge, high e- density
Stereoisomers
compounds differing only in the spatial arrangement of their atoms.
Formal charge
FC = V.E. - (# of bonds + # of dots)
High electron density (3 eg.)
- Double bonds
- Triple bonds
- Lone pairs
Chiral
asymmetric in such a way that the structure and its mirror image are not superimposable.
Racemate
50:50 mixture of enantiomers
Pure chiral molecule will/wont rotate plane polarised light?
yes. if it cant rotate, it isn’t a pure chiral molecule
