DB - the adnexa Flashcards
Tearing of which gland will lead to a zygomatic mucocele?
Zygomatic / dorsal buccal gland
What is the periorbita?
Cone of thick fibrous tissue, which blends with periosteum at the orbital margin.
Which wall of the orbit is formed from the periorbita?
Ventrolateral
Where is the periorbita attached?
Near the optic foramen
What is embedded into the dorso-medial wall of the periorbita?
Trochlear cartilage
What interdigitates with the periorbita?
Tarsal plates
What is a physiological ankyloblepharon?
Carnivores are born with their eyelids fused.
What are the 3 layers of the eyelid?
Skin
Musculofibrous layer
Mucous membrane
What is the origin and insertion of the palpebral ligaments?
Originates from the periosteum of the frontal bone and blends with the eyelids at the medial canthus
What does ectropion mean?
Eyelids are facing outwards
What does entropion mean?
Eyelids are facing inwards
Which muscle elevates the upper eyelid?
Levator palpebrae superioris
Which conjunctiva is continuous with the palpebrae conjunctiva?
Bulbar
What are the 4 signs of horner’s syndrome? Why?
Sunken eyelid - action of retractor bulbi is not opposed.
Droopy upper eyelid - no smooth muscle action of levator palpebrae superioris.
Prominent 3rd eyelid - remains retracted under sympathetic control.
Constricted pupil (miosis) - looses smooth muscle action to the pupil, causing dilation.
What are the 7 extrinsic muscles of the eye?
Retractor bulbi Dorsal rectus Ventral rectus Medial rectus Lateral rectus Ventral oblique Dorsal oblique
